Wat-er We Drinking? Project
Background Information on Project
For chemistry class we had to come up with a product to filter water and help out with a worldwide problem on clean water. We used what we had to create a product although it could use improvement it somewhat works although not fully and isn’t fully effective. We created a product as showed below in slideshow and we explained the reasoning to it which I will summarize on. So below is the slideshow and where I conclude on slideshow is under section of contents.

Our Problem- Our problem was figuring out how to filter water to make it drinkable or otherwise clean and safe for humans. It is a global problem being tackled by many for it affects a ton of people since clean water is important and essential for human survival.
Brainstorm- We began our project by brainstorming questions that helped guide us. With this we used it throughout the project and it was our original questions in regards to project.
Flint Water Crisis- This was something we discussed in class and read about the terrible damage unfiltered (not clean) water can do in affect to humans. This incident was about a whole city’s water supplied that had been compromised due to lack of well structured pipes and its affect in citizens opened eyes more on how essential water is to survival.
Water Filters- As mentioned in slide above, it gets rid of unsafe substances in water overall depending on what is trying to be removed.
Original filter plan- To begin with, we decided our product will have something that water goes through that will filter and that the filtered water will go into a bucket below catching the water which is how we ended up sowing with our product.
Prototype filter- Our product
Filter’s Materials and Uses- Gravel to take out big stuff, sand and activated charcoal to help with filtering water and although this works sometimes it doesn’t, we also used cotton balls, and untraditional filter paper to stop others from seeping through.
Benefits from Filter- Decrease of iron and a small increase pH levels as well as big cleaner but not fully drinkable.
Room for improvement- Be able to clean our product without replacing all its materials, as well as eliminating any bacteria if there is some and other things we have not included.
Dirty water sample- We got this at San Marin High School dirty creek. Which we used to test our filter to see if it works.
Before and After Filtered- Before it was muddy while filtered it was more clearer.
Our data- Shows results I mentioned before but pH level varies with our filtering product.
Further steps- Check for bacteria, clean effectively, money efficient and other ways.
Water table- A demonstration for audience to participate in showing how filtering works.
The slideshow above elaborates more of information over this project.

Reflection
I helped with filing the product, and with running tests of dirty water versus our filtered water which I think I did well. Two things I didn’t do so well is spacing out while presenting and not knowing what to do for some part which I should’ve helped more with slideshow or search up answers. Those are things I could improve on and I think the project overall went well. We did well and there are some things I feel we could’ve improved on with better equipment and more time plus knowledge on subject.
